SGA/Sandman: The Sound of Her Wings
Title: The Sound of Her Wings
Prompt: 30.Death
Claim: John Sheppard, Stargate Atlantis
Fandoms: Stargate Atlantis, The Sandman
Words: 142
Disclaimer: Everything you recognize belongs to someone else. Neil Gaiman is a minor god.

He caught a glimpse of her through the scope as he shifted his aim from the caretaker to Sumner; dark hair and dark eyes, skin even paler than a wraith. She was the one building sandcastles in Afghanistan, the one who should have been invited to his delusion of a party, the one who stood silhouetted against the event horizon and held out her hand as Ford set the paddles to his chest.

It's always been the absence of her (no glint of silver in the corner of his eye, no distant echo of phantom wings) that gave him the courage to take the craziest risks. But now he's taking the craziest one of all, staking everything on a homemade bomb and a heartfelt prayer, and her presence in the copilot's seat beside him is nothing more or less than a comfort.

Wow. Simply beautiful. Death and John Sheppard. I can see this, yes.

Is this part of a fanfic100 table? Because I will follow where you lead. This makes the whole Death is my copilot thing as creepy as, well, it should be.

Ack, pressure!

[info]crossovers100, actually, and my claim is Sheppard- the table's here. And I've heard 'God is my copilot,' but never Death. You're right about the creep factor.

This works wonderfully and beautifully. This:

She was the one building sandcastles in Afghanistan,
is such a perfect, perfect picture.

I was a little nervous about that line after I posted it, I started worrying that somebody who had family or friends over there might be offended. *crosses fingers*

Delight icon!

I though of having her looking out from Mitch and Dex's chopper, but sandcastles seemed to suit her. And it's not like you don't know why she's there.

One of the things I love about Sandman is the way people are never afraid when they meet her, not even if they were terrified by the thought of dying. She's just... she's good, and she cares, and he's seen her more than most people probably should.

Oh, exactly. Exactly right. Wonderful.

And Neil Gaiman totally is a minor god. I think he's got powers he just hasn't revealed to us all yet.

But you obviously know the characters, and that's what makes the difference. Death building sandcastles is so *her*. And I love that John finds her presence in the shuttle comforting.

Oh, wow. I love this. It's so amazingly *fitting* - Death and John Sheppard, just yes, of *course*. This is totally going to be in the back of my head when I watch those scenes from now on. I really like the whole lyrical feel to this, and your writing flows so well that that it's hard to pick out a favourite part, but I like - dark hair and dark eyes, skin even paler than a wraith, and She was the one building sandcastles in Afghanistan, and - *gives up*. Basically, the whole thing. :D

They're a great pair. I want to try writing something with each of the Endless- it's not like I don't have enough prompts to use- but none of the others are speaking as clearly as her.

The whole thing- you mean all four sentences? *g*

Thanks!

Beautiful. That's absolutely the only word that comes to mind. Well, that and, "Neil Gaiman? FUCKYEAH!!!" but that's just a general reaction to the man's work.
(OT: Mirrormask came out here yesterday. I scared people when I saw the poster for it. There was much squeeing.)
